Our Apiary


At L.R.A.C we also have some smaller based projects which we use to engage our learners.


One of our latest projects our learners have been involved in is bee keeping. Our Apiary consists of eight hives, these are looked after throughout the year by all the learners that show an interest in the bees.

The work involves hive management, feeding the bees, swarm control, hive maintenance and harvesting the honey!! The learners also build all the hives and frames in woodwork sessions.

Honey is "manufactured" in one of the world's most efficient factories, the beehive. Bees may travel as far as 55,000 miles and visit more than two million flowers to gather enough nectar to make just a pound of honey

  •   Honey never goes "bad". It is slightly acidic and, therefore, not conducive for bacterial growth.
  •   Honey may help treat your allergies.
  •   Honey is high in carbohydrates and is therefore a great energy source.
  •   Honey contains the vitamins B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid.
  •   Honey contains the minerals calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, sodium and zinc.
